Born around 1080 in Xanten Germany St Norbert lived a worldly life. He served at the court of the Archbishop of Cologne. Later he served Emperor Henry V. A life of pleasure distracted him from his clerical duties. Then in 1115 a thunderstorm changed everything. Lightning struck near his horse. He heard a voice rebuking him. This experience transformed St Norbert. He gave away his possessions. He dedicated himself to preaching. In 1120 he founded the Premonstratensian Order. Its first monastery was at Premontre. Pope Honorius II approved the order in 1126. St Norbert’s order emphasized preaching pastoral work and education. They followed the Rule of St Augustine. Their life was austere. They practiced poverty and reverential liturgical prayer. St Norbert’s devotion to the Blessed Sacrament was deep. His followers fearlessly preached against errors. They brought spiritual renewal to many people. In 1125 St Norbert became Archbishop of Magdeburg. He entered the city barefoot. He was initially refused entry to the archiepiscopal palace. His humble appearance surprised the porter. St Norbert said his poverty showed he should not have been chosen for the position. He later defended Pope Innocent II against Antipope Anacletus II. He won the German church to Innocent’s cause. He influenced King Lothar II III to support Innocent. St Norbert’s travels and work took a toll. He died in Magdeburg on June 6 1134. The Church celebrates his feast day on the anniversary of his death. He is often depicted with an archbishop’s cross and pallium. He holds a monstrance showing his devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. An olive branch symbolizes his role as a peacemaker. St Norbert’s legacy lives on in the Premonstratensian Order. It continues to serve the church today. His life is a testament to transformation and service. Remember his story next time you stand before St Norbert’s church in Dortmund.
