Gazing at Grace Church, can you envision its former glory? Grace Church, a prominent Episcopal church, once stood proudly on Temple Street in Beacon Hill. Its life, from 1835 to 1865, was a brief but vibrant chapter in Boston’s religious history. The church, designed by architect William Washburn, was a marvel of its time. In 1851, Isaac Smith Homans described its breathtaking interior, painted by M. Bragaldi. He detailed its impressive dimensions: 87 feet tall, 68 feet wide, with octagonal towers. Homans marveled at the 45-foot high main arch, the side galleries, and the cluster columns, each 24 inches in diameter. Grace Church wasn’t just a place of worship. Its basement housed two large rooms used for lectures and Sunday school, demonstrating its commitment to community engagement. A succession of ministers guided the congregation. Thomas M. Clark served from 1836 to 1843. Clement Moore Butler followed from 1844 to 1847. Finally, Charles Mason led the church from 1848 until his death in 1862. Sadly, Grace Church’s story ended in 1865 when the building was sold to the Methodist Episcopal Society of North Russell Street. Its physical presence may be gone, but the echoes of its vibrant past remain.
