From its humble beginnings as Volkswagen Vorst in 1949 Audi Brussels has a rich history. This factory initially produced Studebakers. Later it switched to Volkswagens and Porsches. Can you imagine 750 workers producing approximately 75 cars a day? That was the reality here in the 1950s.

The plant’s story is one of adaptation. It transitioned from producing iconic Beetles to the ever-popular Golf. The factory was the heart of Volkswagen’s Belgian operations for decades. It even produced the Passat and the Polo at various points in its long history. The sheer number of vehicles made here is staggering.

A significant change occurred in 2007. The factory was renamed Audi Brussels. This marked a shift towards Audi’s production. The Audi A1 became the factory’s main focus in 2010. This model revitalized the factory giving it a new lease of life. The factory underwent a massive transformation. It transitioned to become a key player in Audi’s electric mobility strategy. The plant started producing the e-tron and e-tron Sportback. These electric vehicles represented a huge leap forward for the factory.

However the story of Audi Brussels is not without challenges. In 2024 Audi announced plans to cease production. This decision followed weak sales figures. It was a blow to the local economy and workforce. A search for investors failed resulting in the closure of the plant. The closure of the Audi Brussels plant marks the end of an era. Its history is a testament to the evolving automotive industry in Belgium. The factory has produced millions of vehicles over its history shaping the Belgian landscape. Audi Brussels represents not just automotive history but also the human stories of those who worked within its walls.
