Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Porto lies the Capela Nossa Senhora das Necessidades. This chapel’s story is shrouded in mystery. Its exact construction date remains elusive. Some believe the Capela Nossa Senhora das Necessidades dates back to the 19th century. Originally, the chapel was dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The reason for the change in patronage to Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception) is unknown. The Capela Nossa Senhora das Necessidades is a small, yet charming structure. Its architecture showcases the elegance of Porto’s Baroque style. The design is possibly attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. He was an Italian architect known for his work on iconic landmarks in Porto, such as the Torre dos Clérigos. It may also have been designed by one of his disciples. The chapel features three altars and a single nave. The main altar houses Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It is flanked by Saint Anne and Saint Sebastian. The side altars hold statues of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. The Confraria de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a religious brotherhood, once organized the annual festivities dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception. Today, the parish of São João Baptista da Foz do Douro carries on this tradition, celebrating the feast day on December 8th. A carpenter, Manuel Joaquim Ferreira, stumbled upon manuscripts. These documents supposedly revealed the chapel’s construction date and its architect. He handed them over to António Carvalho, a member of the confraternity. During a restoration in 1941, Ferreira made a surprising discovery. The back of the statue of Our Lady of the Conception could be moved. It revealed a hidden compartment. Inside were manuscripts related to the chapel’s construction. Sadly, these manuscripts were lost after Carvalho’s death. Their whereabouts remain a mystery to this day. The Capela Nossa Senhora das Necessidades remains, whispering its secrets to those who listen closely.
