Here on this island stands the Castelo de Santa Cruz. It rises defiantly against the crashing waves. This castle boasts a history as rich and turbulent as the sea surrounding it.
The Castelo de Santa Cruz began its life as a crucial defensive structure. General Diego Dasmariñas ordered its construction in the 16th century. He aimed to bolster the defense of A Coruña’s bay. Military engineer Pedro Rodríguez Muñiz designed the initial plans. Construction started around 1594 or 1595. Later in the 18th century, Martín Cermeño added bulwarks, parapets, and pavilions.
Imagine the scene. Spanish soldiers manned the walls. They scanned the horizon for enemy ships. Cannons stood ready to unleash a barrage of fire. The castle served as a shield. It protected the city from naval attacks for centuries.
As its strategic importance waned, the Castelo de Santa Cruz fell into disuse. It stood abandoned. José Quiroga Pérez de Deza acquired the castle. He was the husband of author Emilia Pardo Bazán. They transformed it into their summer residence. Picture the author strolling through the grounds. Perhaps she found inspiration for her novels here.
In 1939, their daughter Blanca Quiroga made a selfless donation. She gifted the castle to the army. It then became a summer camp for children orphaned in the Spanish Civil War. For nearly four decades, laughter and youthful energy filled its halls. The Castelo de Santa Cruz offered solace and joy to those who had suffered great loss.
Since 1989, the city council of Oleiros has owned the castle. They recognized its potential for environmental education. In 2001, the Centro de Extensión Universitaria y Divulgación Ambiental de Galicia found its home here. Today, the Castelo de Santa Cruz promotes environmental awareness. It is a place of learning. The Xunta de Galicia, the University of A Coruña, and the city council of Oleiros work together here.
No longer do we need to arrive by boat. A pedestrian walkway now connects the island to the Paseo de Santa Cruz. Take a walk through the gardens. Enjoy the views of A Coruña and Santa Cruz. Peer into the old dungeons. Imagine the stories they could tell.
The Castelo de Santa Cruz stands as a testament to time. It evolved from a military fortress to a family home. It served as a refuge for orphans. Today, it is a center for education. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our history. It highlights the need to protect our environment. As you stand here, consider the layers of history beneath your feet. Reflect on the countless lives touched by this remarkable place.
