“Can you hear the echoes?” I ask, my voice barely a whisper above the gentle rustling of leaves. “The ghosts of steam engines, the murmur of excited chatter as passengers boarded for Arco de Baúlhe.” Right here, before the now-silent Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Canedo, it’s easy to slip back in time. This unassuming building, once known as Apeadeiro de Caneado, was a bustling hub. Imagine the year 1949. The air vibrates with anticipation. After almost forty years of construction, the Linha do Tâmega railway line finally connects Celorico de Basto to Arco de Baúlhe. The Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Canedo, freshly painted and adorned with colorful, patterned azulejo tiles, stands proudly. People gather, eager to witness the arrival of the inaugural train, a special train from Livração. When it finally pulls into the station, a cheer erupts from the crowd. Sadly, the echoes we hear today are all that remain of that vibrant era. Despite the dedication and effort poured into its creation, the line saw little use. In 1990, after less than half a century of service, the railway line fell silent. Yet the Antiga Estação Ferroviária de Canedo still stands, a testament to a bygone era. It’s a poignant reminder of the ebb and flow of progress and a silent guardian of countless stories whispered along its now-empty tracks.
