Established in 1874 Toyonaka’s Minamikita Elementary School has a rich history. It began as the Minamikita Third Elementary School in Toyonaka Ward. The school moved to its current location in 1876. It was renamed Minamikita Elementary School in 1879. The school’s name changed several times reflecting administrative changes. In 1886 it became Toyonaka Ward Minamikita Public Elementary School. By 1896 it was known as Toyonaka Ward Minamikita Public Elementary School. A high school department was added in 1928. In 1933 the school split. This created Toyonaka Ward Minamikita First Public Higher Elementary School and Toyonaka Ward Minamikita Second Public Higher Elementary School. The latter is the current Minami Elementary School. During World War II it became Toyonaka Ward Minamikita National People’s School. After the war in 1947 it was renamed Toyonaka City Minamikita National People’s School. Finally in 1947 the Toyonaka City Minamikita Elementary School name was adopted. In 1968 a new school building was constructed. A portion of the old school grounds went to the new Toyonaka City Takayama Elementary School. Another portion was released in 1975 to create Toyonaka City Kitazono Elementary School. The original school buildings served students in grades 1 through 6. The school’s service area included parts of Toyonaka City’s Minamikita 1-3 districts. It also served parts of Senriyama 1-2 districts. Graduates typically continued their education at Toyonaka City’s Eleventh Junior High School. The school is located near the Tenjin River. The river flows south toward the Senri River. The river’s proximity made flood control urgent. The school’s history is interwoven with the city’s growth and challenges. It is a testament to the community’s dedication to education and resilience. Toyona City’s Minamikita Elementary School stands as a symbol of enduring community spirit.
