A chilling wind whispers through the trees. We stand before the Mahnmal Bittermark. This isn’t just a park. This is a place of somber remembrance. A place where history casts a long shadow.

Bittermark a quiet residential area today was once a dense forest. Centuries ago it was simply woodland. Then after 1770 settlers began clearing land. They built small farmsteads called Kotten. The area belonged to the Kirchhörde parish.

In 1929 Bittermark became part of Dortmund. Industrialisation arrived with the Gottessegen colliery. A disability workshop now stands where the mine once operated. The colliery’s old settling ponds remain.

But Bittermark’s history is marked by tragedy. Near the end of World War II horrific events unfolded. From March 7 to April 12 1945 the Gestapo murdered around 300 people. The killings took place on a forest clearing here in Bittermark. Other victims were murdered in the Rombergpark and on railway land between Hörde and Berghofen. These victims included forced labourers resistance fighters and ordinary citizens. Their crime often was speaking against the war or Hitler.

The bodies were discovered in April 1945 just days after the US Army liberated Dortmund. In 1960 the Mahnmal Bittermark was erected. This powerful memorial remembers the victims. It’s a stark reminder of the past. Every year on Good Friday a ceremony is held here. People gather to remember those who died.

Bittermark is now a prosperous suburb. Yet the past is not forgotten. This memorial serves as a constant reminder. A powerful symbol of remembrance and peace. It stands as a testament to the importance of never forgetting. It ensures such atrocities never happen again.
