Built on the whispers of a past consumed by flames, the Gutshaus Lichterfelde stands before us. A testament to resilience and reinvention. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and whispered through the leaves of the surrounding Schlosspark Lichterfelde. The Gutshaus Lichterfelde first took root in the late 18th century, rising from the ashes of a previous structure destroyed by fire in 1631. The central portion of the current building dates back to this period, a tangible link to Lichterfelde’s earliest days. The estate’s name, however, is tied to Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn. He acquired the Gutshaus Lichterfelde in 1865 and added the side wings we see today, earning it the nickname “Carstenn Schlösschen.” Carstenn’s vision extended beyond the Gutshaus. He transformed Lichterfelde into a sought-after villa colony, attracting affluent families and shaping the character of the area. The Gutshaus Lichterfelde has witnessed history unfold. In 1924, it became the property of the city of Berlin. After narrowly escaping demolition in 1948, thanks to the efforts of a local community group, the building was restored in 1953. Today, the Gutshaus Lichterfelde is far more than a historical landmark. It serves as a vibrant community center, managed by the Stadtteilzentrum Steglitz e.V. Inside its walls, a neighborhood cafe offers a welcoming space for connection and exchange. A daycare center bustles with the energy of young children. The Gutshaus Lichterfelde also provides a platform for various community initiatives, from language cafes to art groups, fostering inclusivity and enriching the lives of its visitors. The Gutshaus Lichterfelde is a testament to the enduring power of community. A place where history intertwines with the present, offering solace, inspiration, and a shared sense of belonging.
