Gazing upon Biblioteca Pública Municipal Gerardo Diego, one might wonder about its past. This library stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring love for literature. Biblioteca Pública Municipal Gerardo Diego first opened its doors in 1987. It originally resided in a building that once served as a children’s school in Vallecas. The library was initially named after Francisco Fatou, a teacher at the former school. His widow attended the inauguration and generously contributed to expanding the library’s collection. The library thrived in this location until 1995. Then it moved to its current location on Calle del Monte Aya. The new building, inaugurated in January 1996, stands on the site of the old Cine Madrid. Almost the entire building is dedicated to the library. Only a few small rooms are used for adult education. It was here that the library received its current name, Biblioteca Pública Municipal Gerardo Diego. Today, Biblioteca Pública Municipal Gerardo Diego boasts a wide array of resources. Visitors can explore a diverse collection of books, multimedia materials, and periodicals. The library offers comfortable reading spaces, computer labs with internet access, and a dedicated children’s area. It also hosts various events, including book presentations, author meet-and-greets, workshops, and guided tours. Biblioteca Pública Municipal Gerardo Diego is more than just a repository of books. It is a vibrant community hub that fosters a love of reading and learning for all.
