A modest rectangular structure stands before you. This is the Capela de S. Julião. Its history is longer than you might think.

Let me tell you a story about the Capela de S. Julião. Its origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery. The first documented references to this religious building date back to the first half of the 13th century. Can you imagine what Porto was like then?

These early records reveal that a gafaria, an institution for lepers, existed here. It functioned as a place of shelter. It stood along the route between Melgaço and the hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Orada. The Capela de S. Julião was more than just a chapel. It was a haven for those in need.

Centuries later in the 16th century, the administration of the Capela de S. Julião passed to the Misericórdia de Melgaço. A century later, records show the chapel was in dire need of repair. Sadly, only minor modifications were made. The altar saw some changes.

Fast forward to the 1990s. The then-owner of the land financed further restoration work. This included dismantling the altarpiece. They also cleared trees that threatened the chapel’s fragile walls. The Capela de S. Julião was saved from further decay.

Architecturally, the Capela de S. Julião is considered to be of Gothic design. However, it lacks definitive chronological markers. Its foundation likely dates back to the first half of the 13th century. The same period as those first records.

The Capela de S. Julião features a simple rectangular layout. It is covered by polychrome wooden ceilings. The floor is made of beaten earth. The altar table and 18th-century altarpiece are integrated into the single nave.

Outside, the main portal features a pointed arch. This is one of the few decorative elements on the facade. Above is a small niche. It once held a devotional image. Today, it represents Saint Julian, for whom the Capela de S. Julião is named.

Despite the loss of original features, remnants of Romanesque and Gothic styles remain. Look at the side facades. Small windows illuminate the interior. The triangular gables are decorated with corbels.

In front of the Capela de S. Julião stands a 16th-century granite cross. It is classified as a National Monument since 1926. Originally, the São Julião cross stood in the town’s fairgrounds. It was moved here in 1867.

So, as you stand before the Capela de S. Julião, remember its long and varied history. It has been a place of worship and a refuge for travelers. It has survived neglect and restoration. The Capela de S. Julião stands as a testament to faith and resilience.
