Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Berlin lies a tranquil oasis a place where history whispers through the ages. This is the Evangelischer Friedhof Alt-Schmargendorf.

Established around 1250 it is one of the oldest church cemeteries in Berlin. This small cemetery holds a surprising amount of history. It is nestled beside the larger Schmargendorf municipal cemetery. The municipal cemetery was built centuries later in the mid-19th century. There simply wasn’t enough space in the Evangelischer Friedhof Alt-Schmargendorf.

Within the walls of the village church on the cemetery grounds rests a remarkable crypt. Here lie Johann von Wilmersdorf and his wife Eva von Wilmersdorf. Johann was an envoy for the electors Johann Sigismund and Georg Wilhelm. He also owned Wilmersdorf and Schmargendorf until his death in 1635. Their graves are among the most prominent here. The small size of the Evangelischer Friedhof Alt-Schmargendorf means it does not hold the graves of many other famous people.

One other notable grave is that of Peter Gottfried Salomon Schmidt. His grave marker from 1844 is a listed Berlin monument.
