Here at Darnall, we honor a man of profound dedication to education. Orton E. Darnall’s story is more than just a name on a school. It is a legacy woven into the fabric of San Diego’s educational history.

Darnall’s commitment began in his boyhood. Born in West Virginia in 1870 he pursued education relentlessly. He taught in winter and studied in the spring. This shaped his understanding of education.

Though he had a brief stint in politics, Darnall found his true calling elsewhere. He became superintendent of the West Virginia Training School for Boys. Later, he superintended the National Training Schools for Boys in Washington D.C.

A commission to examine state schools led him to San Diego in 1913. Immediately, Darnall fell in love with the city. Despite knowing no one, he resigned from his position and moved west.

A chance encounter in a dentist’s office connected him with an old friend. This friend, W.S. Dorland, offered Darnall a position at his bank. Darnall became cashier and later vice-president.

Darnall’s impact extended far beyond the banking world. He dedicated 27 years as treasurer of the Red Cross. Also he worked with organizations like Goodwill Industries and the Society for Crippled Children. He was deeply involved in the First Presbyterian Church.

In 1927, Darnall was elected to the Board of Education. He served until 1949. This distinguished him among school trustees in California.

He believed in providing the best teachers possible. He knew the importance of encouraging good people to enter the profession. Darnall viewed education as the most important function in American life.

About four out of five San Diego schools were built, remodeled, or enlarged during his term. The City schools won national recognition for leadership under his guidance.

Before his death in 1951, the San Diego Board of Education honored Darnall’s services. They voted to name this school Orton E. Darnall Elementary School.

In January 1952, the Board adopted a Resolution of Appreciation. This resolution memorialized Orton E. Darnall in the official records.

So as you stand here at Darnall Charter, remember Orton E. Darnall. He was a man whose life exemplified service, integrity, and a profound love for education. His legacy continues to inspire students and educators alike.
