Picture this. You are standing before Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Its history whispers from the very stones. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community.
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church began humbly in 1888. A small group sought a new place to worship. Reverend C S Pellam held a revival. This laid the foundation for the church’s birth. On December 8 1888 nine charter members officially established Pleasant Grove. Among them were Mr and Mrs George Harris and Mr and Mrs G B Langford.
Initially services were held in the Pleasant Grove School House. But dreams of a permanent home grew. In 1889 a committee secured land from Mr J D Peters. Peters owned a thriving mill and general store. He generously donated two acres. The land was dense with longleaf pines. Church members felled these trees. They used Peters’ sawmill to transform the wood into lumber. This lumber built their first church.
Interesting fact. The original church had separate entrances for men and women. Men entered left women right. Children sat in the middle. The “Amen corner” was up front on the left. As women’s roles evolved the layout changed. The two doors were replaced by one large door.
Summer revivals were a significant part of life. Services were held morning and night. Baptisms took place at Peters’ mill. Afterwards new members joined the fellowship at the church. If the church was full people would park their wagons or cars near the windows. They listened to the sermons from outside.
The church expanded significantly over the years. A new building was constructed in 1955. Mrs Emma Paramore the sole surviving charter member turned the first sod. The building involved extensive community effort. Members provided much of the labor. They even reused lumber from the old church for the basement.
Further expansions followed including a pastorium educational building and a modern sanctuary. Each addition reflected the growing congregation and their unwavering faith. The church wasn’t just a place of worship it was the heart of the community. Generations gathered here for celebrations baptisms and solace.
Today Pleasant Grove Baptist Church stands as a powerful symbol. It represents the enduring spirit of its founders and members. It is a place where faith and community continue to thrive. It’s a story etched in wood stone and the hearts of all who have passed through its doors.
