Deep in the heart of Schaerbeek, a curious tale unfolds at the Aux Trois Rois. Aux Trois Rois isn’t just a café. It’s a time capsule, a resurrected memory of a bygone era. This building, erected in 1722 as a coaching inn, has witnessed centuries of Brussels life. Aux Trois Rois became a beloved local haunt by the late 19th century. It attracted colorful characters like Pogge, a local hero whose admirers formed “Les Amis de Pogge” in 1875. The group met at Aux Trois Rois, cementing the café’s place in local folklore. The café’s name, Aux Trois Rois, meaning “The Three Kings”, remains a bit of a mystery. A framed drawing inside depicts the first three kings of Belgium. This might explain the name. However, some believe the name has a biblical origin, like many places in the area.

In 1967, Julo and his wife Paula took over Aux Trois Rois. They revived the “Les Amis de Pogge” tradition. The giant effigy of Pogge, paraded through the streets during the Pogge carnival, became a centerpiece of the café. Julo, himself a prominent figure in Schaerbeek, later became the Prince of the Schaarbeek Carnival. He filled Aux Trois Rois with photographs, posters, and souvenirs. These relics offer glimpses into the café’s vibrant past, frequented by groups ranging from majorettes to pigeon fanciers. Sadly, Julo closed Aux Trois Rois in 1997. He felt the neighborhood had changed too much.

The story doesn’t end there. Philippe Debroe, a translator and photographer, stumbled upon the abandoned Aux Trois Rois in 2011. Captivated by its charm, he envisioned a project to preserve its history. He contacted Julo, who still owned the building. Julo shared his memories and archives, revealing the café’s rich past. Debroe organized the Alles es Just festival in 2012. It celebrated Pogge and the café’s history, drawing on Julo’s archive. After Julo’s passing in 2017, Debroe took on the mission of preserving Aux Trois Rois. He meticulously measured the café, documenting every detail. He salvaged the café’s contents, saving them from disposal. He then reconstructed Aux Trois Rois inside a local theatre. This replica, complete with original decor, serves as a living tribute to the café’s legacy.

Debroe continues to add to the collection, incorporating pieces from local artists. He aims to renew and share the neighborhood’s heritage. Aux Trois Rois stands as a testament to the power of memory and community. This reconstructed café invites us to step back in time. It allows us to experience the spirit of a place that once held a special place in the hearts of many.
