A 1600-year-old Ganesha statue awaits you. This is the Karpaga Vinayagar koil in Pillayarpatti. Pillayarpatti itself means Ganesha’s town. This ancient rock-cut temple is a testament to Tamil culture. Its history spans centuries.

The Karpaga Vinayagar koil boasts over 15 inscriptions. These inscriptions help date the temple’s construction. They show the temple developed in three distinct stages. The earliest stage goes back around 1600 years. This is when the innermost shrines were carved. These shrines house Karpaka Vinayakar and Tiruveesar. Ganesha’s unique depiction is a key piece of evidence. The style of the inscriptions and the pre-Pallava pillars also support this early date. The temple predates even Pallava rock-cut temples.

The Pallava dynasty was renowned for its rock-cut temples. However Pillayarpatti’s inscriptions date back further to the 4th century AD. The temple’s location in the Pandya kingdom suggests Pandya patronage. This is supported by Pandya patronage at the nearby Kazhugumalai temple. Later inscriptions date between 1091 AD and 1238 AD. The Pillayarpatti Nagarattar became custodians of the temple during the 13th century. This period saw the construction of Vimanams and Rajagopurams.

The most recent phase involved renovation. The temple tank was also renovated. The tank and two Raja Gopurams make an impressive approach. The main deity is Karpaka Vinayagar. He’s depicted with two arms. His trunk curls towards his right in the valampuri style. The six-foot-tall image is a bas-relief carved into a cave. Scholars say Ganesha is the Lord of wisdom. The shape of his head is said to form the sacred mantra “OM”.

This Ganesha is unique. Unlike other depictions he has only two arms. He sits with folded legs. His stomach doesn’t touch the Asanam. The Asanam is in the form of “Artha Padma”. Vinayaga means “Incomparable Leader”. Worshipping the Valamburi Vinayagar brings wealth. The temple also features Marudeeswarar. Marudha tree worship indicates the temple’s ancient status. A special sculpture shows a cow worshipping Shiva with milk. Kubheran Lord of wealth worshipped here.

A five-headed snake wearing a Lingam symbolizes the five senses. The Lingam represents God. Goddesses Laxmi Saraswathi and Durgai are together. Three Lingams Thiruveesar Marudheesar and Senchadeswarar are also found with three Goddesses. Worshipping Kathyayini Amman relieves women from sevvai dosham. This prevents marriage problems. “Sabda Madhar” has a separate sannidhi. The Karpaga Vinayagar koil stands as a magnificent testament to faith and devotion.
