In 1899, a seed of faith was planted in Shettleston. Saint Serf’s Episcopal Church’s story began with Reverend George Crane. He was the Rector of St. John’s Church in Baillieston. He saw a need and started an Episcopal congregation in Shettleston. Initially, the congregation gathered at Eastmuir School for their worship. Imagine them huddled together, sharing prayers and hymns in a simple classroom. By 1917, their devotion led to the construction of a modest corrugated iron building. This humble structure served as a mission. It was a testament to their growing community. Saint Serf’s Episcopal Church continued to grow. In the early 1930s, the present church building was constructed. The architects were Whyte and Galloway. The church was consecrated on December 22, 1934. It stands as a beacon of faith in the Shettleston area. Over the years, Saint Serf’s has been linked with various parishes. It was part of St. John’s in Baillieston, Christ Church in Bridgeton, and even St. Mary’s Cathedral. Eventually, in 1996, Saint Serf’s, St. John’s Baillieston, and St. Kentigern’s Dennistoun united. They formed the East End Team Ministry. Saint Serf’s Episcopal Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and community in Glasgow.
