Ever wondered where the digital heart of Freiburg University beats? Right here, at the Rechenzentrum.

The Rechenzentrum, or University IT Services, has been Freiburg University’s central IT provider since 1966. Imagine back then. Computers were not as common. The university needed a central place for computing. That’s how the Rechenzentrum started.

Initially, computers resided within the Institute for Applied Mathematics. Soon, a larger system was needed. In 1971, the state of Baden-Württemberg funded the construction of the building we see today. Throughout the 70s, it expanded to become the largest University IT Services department in South Baden.

Early on, the Rechenzentrum connected university institutions via telephone to its mainframe computer. This dramatically expanded data transmission. By the 80s, more computers linked together boosting computing power. Scholarly communication advanced significantly. Computer operations moved beyond simple calculations. Text and image processing became possible. The Rechenzentrum provided expert consulting and training to university members.

The late 80s brought affordable personal computers. PCs became a part of the university’s daily routine.

In 1990, Freiburg University connected to the WiN scholarly network. It also joined BelWü, Baden-Württemberg’s extended LAN. This opened doors for further improvements, including high-speed computing.

The Rechenzentrum developed an in-house information system called “cInfo” in the summer of 1991. This system became a model for future communication systems, even influencing the World Wide Web.

Today, the Freiburg University Network or FUN manages data and information exchanges. The Rechenzentrum runs FUN. It acts as the connection between the university network, the regional BelWü network, and the internet. FUN supports scholarly communication and international cooperation.

Wireless internet access arrived on campus in 2001. This allowed mobile communication. Information now followed the user. Wireless access became more widespread and easier to use in later years.

The Rechenzentrum offers vital services to university members. These services include backup security, database and file servers, teaching platforms, and web services. They also provide central virus and spam filters.

Video conferencing has grown significantly. The Rechenzentrum has a modern video conferencing room. Research groups meet virtually to discuss findings and exchange information.

Beyond courses, the Rechenzentrum provides extensive assistance. It helps with IT system planning and operation. They also assist with software licenses and diagnosing system failures.

The Rechenzentrum remains open to all students and employees. It supports their scholarly needs. From its humble beginnings to its current role, the Rechenzentrum has been at the heart of Freiburg University’s growth. It ensures the university stays at the forefront of technology and innovation.
