Envision a ribbon of green unfurling along the Havel’s edge. This is the Nuthepark in Potsdam. It is a testament to nature’s resilience and human vision. Between 1998 and 2002, this near-natural landscape park was created. It transformed a once-neglected area into a vibrant space for recreation and reflection.

The Nuthepark stretches from Potsdam’s main train station to Babelsberg Park. This 1.25 km stretch connects the historic park of Babelsberg with Potsdam city center. The park embraces the existing woodland. Glades and old tree rows create special places.

Imagine children laughing in thematic playing areas. Picture families picnicking on large lawns adjacent to the waterfront. Envision cyclists gliding along the Havel riverbank. This path leads from downtown Potsdam to the historic Babelsberg Park. A covered wooden bridge enhances this relaxing route.

The Nuthepark was part of the 2001 Potsdam BUGA. BUGA means Federal Garden Show. It was designed with “Places alongside the River” in mind. The park features diverse vegetation. An imposing lime tree hall stands proudly. Wet meadows offer a glimpse into unique ecosystems. A forest playground sparks children’s imaginations.

Consider the careful renaturation of the federal waterway’s banks. Maintenance measures were carried out in the “Nuthe Valley” landscape protection area. Small and large squares dot the landscape. The Havel terrace offers stunning views. A public pier invites visitors to pause and appreciate the surroundings.

To connect the two parts of the park, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge spans the Nuthe. This bridge sits shortly before the Nuthe flows into the Havel. The Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg created new green spaces in 2020. These spaces are intended to merge with the Nuthepark.

The Nuthepark won the Landesbaupreis Brandenburg in 2002. It secured second prize. This award recognizes the park’s design and its contribution to the city. The Nuthepark is more than just a park. It is a place where nature, recreation, and history intertwine. It offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Potsdam.
