Surely you’ve noticed the impressive Spanish Gothic architecture before you? This is the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles. It stands as a testament to faith and history. The First Baptist Church has been a beacon in Los Angeles since 1874.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the early days. Believers gathered to pray on North Spring Street. The church later moved to Sixth and Fort Streets in 1884. Philanthropists like Isaac Newton Van Nuys and James Boon Lankershim funded its construction.

By 1897, the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles had outgrown its space. A second building rose at 727 South Flower Street. Even the famous evangelist Dwight L. Moody attended its dedication. In 1913, Billy Sunday preached here inspiring many.

Now, look at the current structure. This magnificent building was completed in 1927. Allison & Allison designed it in the Spanish Gothic style. It is said to be modeled after the Ducal Palace in Mantua, Italy. In 1981, it gained recognition as Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument 237.

The First Baptist Church played a crucial role in the Pentecostal revival. It is said to have started here in 1905. Rev. Joseph Smale sparked the movement after meeting Evan Roberts in Wales. Frank Bartleman, a key figure in the revival, also attended this church.

Today, the First Baptist Church continues its mission. It welcomes all to worship every Sunday at 10:00 am. You can join in person or online via Facebook. The current pastor, Rev. Dr. Scott T. Arnold, has served since 2020. He is an American Baptist minister since 1984.

The First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is more than just a building. It’s a community. It is a place where people can meet Jesus. It is a place where they engage in life-giving fellowship. The church strives to be a welcome table for all. It celebrates the diversity of Los Angeles.
