Is it possible for a church to have more lives than a cat? Saint John the Baptist Church, right here on West 30th Street, seems to think so. This church, nestled in Manhattan’s bustling Fur District, has a history as tangled and dramatic as a daytime soap opera. It began its life modestly in 1840, a simple wooden structure built for the growing German Catholic community. Saint John the Baptist Church was only the second German Catholic parish in the city, following St. Nicholas’ Church. Imagine the quiet dedication on September 20th, a stark contrast to the cacophony of the city today. But the peace didn’t last. This first church fell victim to flames in 1847, marking the first of its many resurrections. A new brick church rose from the ashes, only to be plagued by infighting and trustee drama. Pastors came and went like revolving doors, some lasting mere weeks before clashing with the headstrong parishioners. The church was even placed under interdict multiple times. Then, in 1870, Archbishop John Cardinal McCloskey made a bold move, closing Saint John the Baptist Church and handing the reins to the Capuchin Friars. This marked a turning point. Under the Capuchins, especially the energetic Father Bonaventure Frey, the parish finally found its footing. Frey, a Swiss-born Capuchin, inspired the congregation to build the grand structure we see today. Construction began in 1871, and the church, designed by the renowned architect Napoleon LeBrun, was dedicated just a year later. The French Gothic style, with its soaring arches and intricate details, reflects the newfound stability and ambition of the parish. LeBrun, known for his impressive churches and cathedrals throughout New York and Philadelphia, crafted a sanctuary that could hold 1,200 souls. The original cost? A hefty $175,000. The church even boasts a carillon of five bells, cast by the J.G. Stuckstede & Brothers Foundry, whose melodies still ring out across the city each day. The story doesn’t end there. In 1997, another fire ravaged Saint John the Baptist Church, destroying the organ, choir gallery, and several treasured artworks. But, like a phoenix, the church rose again, restored and renovated. While the original pipe organ was sadly lost, replaced by an electronic one, the spirit of Saint John the Baptist Church remains strong. It continues to serve the community, a steadfast beacon of faith amidst the ever-changing landscape of New York City.
