February in Ciempozuelos. A chilly wind whips through the streets of Madrid. Imagine two figures, Bishop José María Benito Serra and Antonia María de Oviedo y Schönthal, huddled together against the cold. They stand before a simple building, the Asilo de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. This humble asylum, the birthplace of the Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor, is about to change the lives of countless women. Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor. The name itself evokes images of redemption and hope. Serra, a man driven by compassion, saw the plight of marginalized women, particularly those caught in the web of prostitution. He envisioned a place of refuge, a sanctuary where they could find solace, support, and a path towards a new life. Antonia, a woman of unwavering faith and determination, shared his vision. On February 2nd, 1870, within the walls of this very asylum, the Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor was formally founded. Antonia, taking the religious name Antonia María de la Misericordia, became the first sister of the congregation. The Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor’s mission was clear. They dedicated themselves to the social work, re-education, and social reintegration of women caught in the cycle of prostitution. They offered not just shelter but also education, vocational training, and emotional support. This holistic approach addressed the root causes of their vulnerability, empowering them to break free and rebuild their lives. The congregation quickly gained recognition for its vital work, receiving the decretum laudis pontificio in 1881 and final approval in 1895. From its humble beginnings in Ciempozuelos, the Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor expanded its reach throughout Spain, then to South America and the United States. The Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor continues its crucial work today, operating in 15 countries across the globe. Their mission remains unchanged. They offer a beacon of hope, providing a safe haven and a pathway to a brighter future for women in need. The Oblatas Del Santísimo Redentor’s legacy is a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and unwavering belief in the potential of every human being.
