“Ever heard of a park born from a neighborhood’s dream?” That’s Parque Cataluña. It’s not just a green space. It is a community’s heart in Madrid.

Parque Cataluña in Alcobendas is more than trees and paths. It is a story of people coming together. It is about building something special.

Let’s journey back to 1975. The neighborhood of Torrejón de Ardoz was growing. Construction was everywhere. Amidst this boom, a sports club emerged. It was Club Deportivo Parque Cataluña. The club was owned by the residents themselves.

Two years later, something special happened. A basketball section was added. Miguel Gil played a key role. He founded the basketball section in 1977. According to him, the club was a selling point for the new apartments. It had a pool, a basketball court, and a small soccer field. People gathered on Saturdays. José Luis called “the grandfather” suggested starting a basketball team. And so it began.

The club’s popularity grew unexpectedly. Workers from the U.S. Air Force base joined. This boosted the basketball section. They then formed various categories. The goal was to improve the facilities. In the early days, they played with wooden backboards on a dirt court. Eventually, they managed to expand and improve the club.

More players and coaches joined. This raised the quality of the club. Parque Cataluña became known throughout Madrid. Their home games became highly anticipated events. The community always came out to support them.

Today, Club Deportivo Parque Cataluña has 16 sections. These sections cover all levels and genders. Besides basketball, they offer athletics, soccer, tennis, and rhythmic gymnastics. They have even won several Spanish championships in gymnastics. Basketball remains popular. The successes of the national team have helped this. More and more people are signing up and becoming fans.

Parque Cataluña has humble beginnings. It has a past that includes American players. The club is focused on youth basketball. They especially focus on women’s basketball.

So, Parque Cataluña is a testament to community spirit. It shows what can happen when people work together. It is a park created by the dreams of its neighbors. As you wander through, remember the story. The story of how a simple sports club became the heart of a neighborhood.
