“A forlorn war memorial.” That’s how the Review Archives described the Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele. We stand here today before this monument a tribute to local heroes.
The Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele was erected in 1945. The local community wanted to honor the soldiers who served in World War II. This stele stands as a testament to their sacrifice.
For many years John and Irma Kelly lovingly maintained this memorial. They lived a lifetime on Nixon Street. Their dedication kept the spirit of remembrance alive.
About 20 years ago vandals struck. They spray-painted the memorial in black paint. They even stole the flagpole.
But the community wouldn’t let it fall into disrepair. The Kellys led the charge to repair and restore the site. The Hattal-Taylor VFW Post 333 rededicated the memorial. Veterans ceremoniously shot rifles. They played Taps in front of the stele.
Today the Kellys are no longer with us. The Review Archives and Senator Hughes have stepped in to restore it. They aim to make this treasure shine again.
The Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele requires some work. It needs brick pointing and stucco patching. It also needs power washing and minor landscaping. The Belgium block border needs resetting. A torn and tattered American Flag needs replacement.
The Review Archives Administrator Donna Persico is dedicated to this cause. Her father was a World War II Marine Veteran. She hopes to have the Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele restored by Memorial Day.
The Review Archives wants to preserve the community’s rich history. This memorial is a part of that history. The Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele stands as a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future. It deserves our respect and care. It is more than just a stone monument. It represents courage sacrifice and community spirit.
Let us take a moment to reflect on the names etched into this stele. These are not just names. They are stories of bravery and dedication. They are the sons and daughters of this community. They answered the call of duty. They fought for freedom. They defended our way of life.
The Shawmont Roll of Honor War Memorial Stele is a place for remembrance. It is a place for gratitude. It is a place for honoring those who served. May this memorial continue to stand tall. May it inspire future generations to cherish peace and remember the cost of freedom.
