A haunting echo of history lingers in the very air around Hächendorf. The name Hächendorf is often spoken casually today. But did you know its origins are shrouded in mystery?

Welcome to Hächendorf. This small village is part of Mönchhagen near Rostock. We will explore a place with layers of history and stories waiting to be uncovered.

Hächendorf was first mentioned in a document from September 15, 1302. King Erik of Denmark granted the knight Johann Moltke settlements. These included Toitendorf, Geelsdorf, Alt-Krummendorf, and Neu-Krummendorf. Hinrichsdorf, Peez, Lübbersdorf, Nienhagen, Goorstorf, and also Hächendorf were also part of the settlements.

The village’s name has evolved. In 1302, it was Hesekendorpe. The name’s origin is debated. Some say it comes from “Hase” meaning hare. Others believe it refers to a person or the abundance of oak trees. “Hes Ekendorpe” could mean “the small village in the oak forest”.

The Moltke family owned Hächendorf until 1361. The village was part of Toitenwinkel. In 1361, Johann Moltke sold Toitenwinkel to Rostock. This included Hächendorf and other villages for 9,000 marks.

For centuries, Hächendorf was linked to the Toitenwinkel estate. Around 1778, the estate became property of the Duke of Schwerin. The ducal office in Toitenwinkel then leased the Hächendorf estate.

In 1843, a fire destroyed a large part of the Hächendorf farm. Before the fire, there were at least two houses opposite the village pond.

In 1884, a lioness escaped from a traveling menagerie. The lioness hid in the Osterholz near Hächendorf. Soldiers were called in to hunt the animal. The lioness was shot and killed.

During World War II, prisoners from the Barth concentration camp were liberated near Hächendorf. Russian tanks surprised the guards. A memorial stone was erected in 1970. It commemorates the prisoners and victims of the death march.

After World War II, Hächendorf saw significant changes. In 1945, refugees were housed in Hächendorf. The Domanial-Gut was divided. Twenty-seven new farms were created.

In 1958, Hächendorf became part of Mönchhagen. Before that Friedrich Lau was mayor.

Today, Hächendorf is a quiet village. Hächendorf still carries the weight of its past within its boundaries. From its debated name to its role in tragic events, Hächendorf is a great place with a rich history. Its story is a reminder of resilience amid shifting times.
