Whispers from the stones. That’s what I hear at Tollcross Cemetery. This Glasgow landmark isn’t just a resting place. It’s a living history book. Tollcross Cemetery holds stories of ordinary lives and extraordinary people. It opened in 1897. Some records show earlier burials though. James Shaw of Airdrie rests here. He died in 1879 at the grand old age of 91. Earlier records sadly are lost to time.

One intriguing resident is the author of “Wee Willie Winkie”. William Miller is buried in an unmarked family plot. His legacy lives on though his grave remains uncelebrated. Tollcross Cemetery reflects the rich tapestry of life in Glasgow’s east end. Prominent figures from merchants to war heroes are laid to rest among us.

Take Reverend William McIlquham. He was the very first minister of Tollcross Relief Church. He served from 1807 to 1822. His son John also rests here. He managed the Clyde Iron Works. Another notable figure is Reverend William Auld. The third minister of Tollcross Relief Church. His Manse was a popular wedding venue. He performed numerous ceremonies especially during Glasgow Fair and Hogmanay. Imagine the joyous celebrations that once filled those walls.

Reverend George Sharp’s story is a remarkable one. He began as a clerk at Colville’s steel works. He later became a Methodist minister in New York. He returned to Scotland eventually forming a new church. His wife Jane was also a minister. She is buried by his side. Their story transcends geographical boundaries.

John Kinniburgh. A schoolmaster. He taught in Tollcross for 46 years. His dedication to his community is evident. He was the Session Clerk at Tollcross Church for an impressive 47 years. Even today his name resonates through the generations. Tollcross Cemetery is a testament to the lives lived and legacies left behind. Each grave holds a unique story waiting to be discovered. The whispers from the stones at Tollcross Cemetery invite us to pause reflect and remember.
