How does a mosque find itself near a palace? Here we are at the Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque. It is a story of faith and location. This mosque is the largest in Sichuan province. Its name means “Palace Wall”. This is because of its proximity to a former dynasty’s palace.

The Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque’s story began in the 16th century. Imagine Chengdu then. Islam had already been present in Sichuan for centuries. Persians had settled here during the Tang Dynasty. Muslim soldiers spread their faith during the Mongol Empire. The Ming Dynasty saw even more Muslims arrive. They came from different regions of China.

The mosque faced challenges. War in 1917 heavily damaged it. Financial constraints reduced its size. It was rebuilt. But it went from 6600 square meters to 5000 square meters. The mosque stands at its current location since November 1998.

Look at the architecture. It blends Arabic, Ming and Qing styles. You will see an entrance wall and gates. There is also a bathroom and library. The library holds Islamic books. They are in both Arabic and Chinese.

The first gate has a tablet. It displays the mosque’s name. The second gate features a tablet from the Qing Dynasty. It reads “Kai Tian Gu Jiao”. This translates to “the most ancient religion”.

Islam in Sichuan has diverse roots. Some Muslims follow the Qadim school. Others belong to the Ikhwan. Sufism also has followers here. Sichuan is unique. It is one of the few provinces outside Northwest China with many Sufis.

The Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque played a role in Islamic education. A school opened here after the mosque’s completion. Chengdu became a cradle of Islamic learning. Many respected religious leaders were taught here. The mosque also houses the Islamic Association of Sichuan Province.

Remember this place. The Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque stands as a testament to the long history of Islam in Sichuan. It shows the blend of cultures and faiths in this region.
