“Toni, you are a devil of a fellow! Toni, you are a football god!” These famous words echo here at the Toni-Turek-Denkmal. This impressive bronze statue captures the energy of a pivotal moment in German football history. The Toni-Turek-Denkmal stands proudly near the entrance of the ESPRIT arena in Dusseldorf. It commemorates the legendary goalkeeper, Anton “Toni” Turek, and his heroic contribution to Germany’s first World Cup victory in 1954. The 4.5-meter tall, 1350-kilogram statue was unveiled on July 4, 2014, exactly 60 years after that historic win against Hungary. Turek, born in Duisburg in 1919, joined Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1950. He played 133 league matches for the club. His real claim to fame, however, came on the international stage. At the 1954 World Cup in Bern, Switzerland, Turek’s performance was instrumental to Germany’s triumph. Radio commentator Herbert Zimmermann immortalized Turek with his enthusiastic outburst during the final match, “Toni, you are a devil of a fellow! Toni, you are a football god!” The Toni-Turek-Denkmal depicts Turek in his iconic goalkeeping stance. The plinth beneath carries inscriptions detailing his achievements and his importance to both Fortuna Düsseldorf and the German national team. One inscription reads, “Toni Turek. World Cup Winner.” A plaque provides further details about his life and career, including his birth and death dates, his time with Fortuna Düsseldorf, and his role in the 1954 World Cup victory. Interestingly, Turek wasn’t able to make a living solely from football. He worked for the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft, today’s Rheinbahn AG Düsseldorf. To participate in the 1954 World Cup, he had to take four weeks of unpaid leave. The German Football Association covered his lost wages, which were less than 19 Marks a day. Upon his return to Düsseldorf after the World Cup, Turek was greeted by over 100,000 people celebrating his victory. The Toni-Turek-Denkmal not only honors a sporting hero but also provides a glimpse into the history of German football and the life of a remarkable man.
