Journey with me to 1897 Denver. Picture a bustling city, horses and carriages clattering on the streets. Amidst this scene, a small group of Jewish immigrants established Beth HaMedrosh Hagodol, known today as BMH-BJ. BMH-BJ stands as a testament to their enduring faith and vision. Originally, BMH rented the former Temple Emanuel building for High Holiday services. In 1898, they purchased that very building. Tragedy struck in 1902 when a fire severely damaged the structure. From the ashes, however, rose a new era for BMH-BJ. A prominent figure, Rabbi Charles Eliezer Hillel Kauvar, joined the community in 1902. He guided the congregation for an impressive 50 years. In 1916, a cornerstone was laid for a new building, a moment of civic pride attended by dignitaries like former Colorado Governor Henry Buchtel. BMH occupied this building until 1966. The congregation’s journey continued in 1963 when BMH-BJ acquired land on South Monaco Parkway. Their current building, a beacon of Jewish life in Denver, was completed in 1969. Interestingly, BMH-BJ was a founding member of the United Synagogue of America, now the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. BMH-BJ maintained this affiliation until 1955, then hiring its first Orthodox rabbi in 1956. The story of BMH-BJ took another turn in 2007. It merged with another historic Denver congregation, Beth Joseph, which was founded in 1922. This union created the BMH-BJ we know today. The synagogue’s history is rich with adaptation, growth, and a commitment to Jewish tradition. Today, BMH-BJ is a vibrant center of Jewish life in Denver, serving a diverse community with a range of programs and services. It stands as a symbol of resilience, community, and enduring faith, inviting all to connect with their Jewish heritage.
