“Ahoy there. Welcome to Captain’s Quarters.” This isn’t just any bar. It’s a portal to a 17th-century ship’s luxurious heart.

The story of the Quarters SE is entwined with San Diego’s vibrant history. Imagine the Gaslamp Quarter, where Victorian buildings meet modern skyscrapers. This area, only sixteen blocks big, is known as the West Coast’s premier entertainment district.

But let’s rewind a bit. In the 1860s, this area was New Town. It was a contrast to Old Town. Alonzo Horton envisioned a new city center here in 1867. He bought land and made 5th Avenue the main street.

Now, fast forward to 2016. Matt Spencer opened The Grass Skirt. He felt drawn to the space next door. In 2022, the space became available. Spencer created Captain’s Quarters. It is a whimsical sister venue to The Grass Skirt.

Think of the literal captain’s quarters on those old ships. This bar transports you there. It’s a moody adventure on the high seas.

The Gaslamp Quarter itself has seen many transformations. From the rough-and-tumble Stingaree district to a “Sailor’s Entertainment” hub. The area has been through many things. But it has emerged as a sophisticated destination.

In the 1970s, people wanted to preserve the buildings here. By 1976, the city aimed to redevelop the Gaslamp Quarter. They sought to make it a national historic district.

Today, the Gaslamp Quarter is home to over 100 restaurants and nightclubs. It is also filled with retail shops. You can find every type of cuisine here. Al fresco dining is plentiful. Rooftop lounges offer stunning views.

As you explore the Quarters SE, remember the Gaslamp Quarter’s past. It’s a place where history meets modern entertainment. Enjoy your time in this unique space. It’s a tribute to adventure and refinement.
