In 1950 the institution started as the Tank School of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The Tank School was established in Tianjin. Later it moved to Beijing due to dispersed locations and lack of training grounds.

In 1951 the name changed to the First Tank School of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. Xu Guangda served as the concurrent principal.

In 1953 the school became the First Tank School of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army again. However in 1969 the school was discontinued.

The school was rebuilt in December 1978. It was named the Tank School of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. This time it was located in Su County Anhui Province. Bai Lian served as the principal.

In July 1982 the school relocated to Bengbu City Anhui Province. Zhu Hai Feng became the principal.

By June 1986 it was upgraded to the Bengbu Tank Academy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. In November 2011 it achieved the status of the Armored Forces Academy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. It became a deputy military level institution.

In 2017, a significant restructuring took place. The current 中国人民解放军陆军装甲兵学院 was re-established. The academy has three main sections. The main campus is in the Lugouqiao area of Fengtai District Beijing. The Bengbu campus is in Bengbu City Anhui Province. The Officers School is in the Economic and Technological Development Zone of Changchun City Jilin Province.
