From humble beginnings crafting playing cards in 1889, Nintendo Co. Ltd., right here in Kyoto, has become a global entertainment giant. Nintendo’s story starts not with pixels and joysticks, but with craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi and his handmade hanafuda cards. These flower cards, tolerated even after Japan banned most gambling in 1882, became Nintendo’s foundation. Yamauchi, unafraid of the hanafuda’s association with the Yakuza, became its primary producer.

Initially called Nintendo Koppai, the company faced challenges. The niche market, the slow and costly card production, coupled with their long lifespan, made business difficult. Nintendo Co. Ltd. adapted, creating a cheaper card line called “Tengu” and expanding distribution. They even ventured into Western-style playing cards in 1902, a move that broadened their appeal. To ensure the family business continued, Yamauchi adopted his son-in-law, Sekiryo Kaneda, who later formalized the company as Yamauchi Nintendo & Co., Ltd. in 1933.

Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s transformation accelerated in the mid-20th century under Hiroshi Yamauchi. He modernized the company, centralizing factories, and introduced plastic playing cards in 1953, a first in Japan. A partnership with Disney in 1959 brought familiar characters to Nintendo’s cards, captivating children and boosting sales. The company went public in 1962, and by 1963 adopted its current name, Nintendo Co. Ltd., expanding into games and toys.

The arrival of Gunpei Yokoi in 1965 marked a turning point. Yokoi’s ingenuity led to Japan’s first electronic toy, the Beam Gun, in 1970, selling over a million units. The Ultra Hand and Love Tester followed, cementing Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s foray into electronics. The 1973 oil crisis presented a hurdle, but Yamauchi’s vision remained clear. Partnerships with Magnavox and Mitsubishi Electric paved the way for the Color TV-Game series, Nintendo’s first home console, in 1977.

The late 1970s and 1980s brought iconic creations. The Game & Watch, Donkey Kong, and the arrival of Shigeru Miyamoto, the mind behind Mario, reshaped gaming forever. The Famicom, launched in 1983, and its international counterpart, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), revitalized the gaming industry after the 1983 crash. The NES, with classics like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, became a cultural phenomenon.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. continued to innovate with the Game Boy in 1989, the Super Nintendo in 1990, and the Nintendo 64 in 1996. These systems, along with iconic franchises like Pokémon, solidified Nintendo’s place as an entertainment powerhouse. The company continued its evolution with the GameCube, Nintendo DS, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and most recently, the Nintendo Switch. Each system brought unique gameplay experiences and further expanded Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s global reach. From playing cards to pioneering consoles and beloved characters, Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s legacy is one of creativity, innovation, and an enduring ability to bring joy to generations of gamers. Standing here, at the heart of it all, you can almost feel the pulse of creativity that has shaped gaming history.
