The air hangs heavy with the scent of incense, and the sun paints the golden chedi of Wat San Luang in a warm, ethereal glow. Wat San Luang is one of Chiang Mai’s most important temples, a testament to the city’s Lanna heritage. Constructed in the 14th century by King Saen Mueang Ma, Wat San Luang was built to house the ashes of his father. It took 10 years to build, but the temple tragically remained incomplete after the king’s death. His widow continued the construction, and the temple was finally completed in the mid-15th century. The chedi of Wat San Luang stands as a silent sentinel, its towering form a testament to the city’s history. It is also home to the Phra Phut Chaloem Sirirat, a replica of the famed Emerald Buddha, enshrined in the eastern niche of the chedi. The original Emerald Buddha, once housed in Wat San Luang, is today a national treasure in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. The story of the Emerald Buddha is a tale of intrigue and adventure. The Emerald Buddha, a small but significant green jade statue, symbolizes the power and prestige of the Lanna Kingdom. It embodies the essence of Buddhism in Thailand and is a reminder of the city’s rich cultural heritage. During the 16th century, a powerful earthquake struck Chiang Mai, causing immense devastation. The top 30 meters of the chedi’s spire fell to the ground. The quake also damaged the eastern niche, which held the Emerald Buddha. The people of Chiang Mai, fearing that the priceless statue would be lost, moved it to the nearby Wat Phra Singh. It was later taken to Luang Prabang, the capital of Laos, then finally, to Bangkok. Today, the chedi stands as a reminder of the resilience of the people of Chiang Mai and their reverence for the sacred. Visitors to the temple can walk amongst the ancient structures, admire the intricate carvings, and absorb the serenity of the place. You can feel the palpable energy of faith and devotion in the hushed whispers of monks chanting their prayers. Wat San Luang is a mesmerizing journey into the heart of Chiang Mai’s rich history and spiritual legacy.
