Hidden within the heart of Delhi’s power, the Prime Minister’s Office, or PMO, stands as a silent witness to India’s unfolding story. The South Block of the Secretariat Building houses this nerve center. It’s not just an office; it’s a crucible where policies are forged and decisions that shape a nation are made. The PMO wasn’t always called that. Until 1977, it was known as the Prime Minister’s Secretariat. The change happened during Morarji Desai’s time as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister’s Office is much more than just the Prime Minister’s personal workspace. It’s a complex organism, with a dedicated staff assisting the Prime Minister. This includes the Principal Secretary, currently Pramod Kumar Mishra, and several layers of support staff. The PMO manages a wide array of responsibilities, from coordinating with various ministries to addressing public grievances. It even oversees crucial matters like defense and appointments of key figures like ambassadors and Election Commission members. The Prime Minister’s Office also handles the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) and the National Defence Fund (NDF). The PMO is more than just a building. It’s a dynamic hub connecting the Prime Minister to the nation and the world. It embodies the essence of Indian democracy, where the will of the people is translated into action.
