A scalpel gleams in the hand of a marble man. We stand before the Louis-Joseph baron Seutin Statue. It stands as a tribute to a medical pioneer.

This monument honors Louis-Joseph Seutin. He was a chief surgeon in Brussels. The statue stands near the Hôpital Saint-Pierre entrance. It is on Rue aux Laines.

Louis-Joseph baron Seutin served as chief surgeon from 1823 to 1862. French inscriptions on the statue’s base remind us of this. They read “LOUIS-JOSEPH BARON / SEUTIN / CHIRURGIEN EN CHEF / DES / HOPITAUX DE BRUXELLES / DU 1 AVRIL 1823 AU 29 JANVIER 1862”.

The base also reveals his life’s timeline. One side notes his birth: “NE A NIVELLES / LE 19 OCTOBRE / 1793”. The opposite side marks his death: “DECEDE A BRUXELLES / LE 29 JANVIER 1862”.

Guillaume Geefs sculpted this monument in 1875. “Gme GEEFS / STATUAIRE 1875” is inscribed on the pedestal.

Louis Seutin’s contributions extended beyond surgery. He gained international recognition for using starch-stiffened bandages. These bandages helped reduce fractures. Before him, egg white was used to soak bandages. Seutin was also a pioneer. He was the first to use chloroform for anesthesia.

But the Louis-Joseph baron Seutin Statue commemorates more than inventions. Seutin championed public hygiene. He dedicated himself to training young doctors. As a senator for Brussels, he advocated for better public health. He also helped found the Université libre de Bruxelles.

Initially, the statue graced the hospital’s main entrance. After two renovations, it was moved. Now, the Louis-Joseph baron Seutin Statue stands at the entrance to the hospital wards.

The Louis-Joseph baron Seutin Statue captures a moment in time. It embodies Seutin’s commitment to medicine and public service. His legacy lives on in this monument. It inspires future generations of healers.
