Gazing up at Apek Hill, have you ever wondered about its name? Apek Hill, affectionately named after the Hokkien word for “uncle,” reflects the many older gentlemen who frequent its slopes. Apek Hill offers a beautiful escape, nestled between Ampang, Cheras, and Hulu Langat. It’s a popular spot for hikers, with trails open from 6 am to 6 pm. The paths wind through lush greenery, a mix of flat terrain and steeper climbs. You can complete the 5km main trail in about 1.5 hours. Apek Hill is more than just a hike though. It’s a sensory experience. Imagine the chatter of monkeys, the songs of birds, and the buzzing of crickets. Picture vibrant butterflies flitting through the air and the occasional glimpse of unique mushrooms. You’ll find designated stops along the way, known as Levels 1 through 6, plus the Gold stop and Small Bridge station. These were established by the local hiking community. While internet access is generally available, signboards are scarce. Remember your route or bring a map to avoid getting lost. There are several entrances to Apek Hill, including Cheras Awana, Wangsa Cheras, Bukit Hatamas, and Saga Hill. If you’re driving, park responsibly along the main road and avoid blocking residents’ driveways. Near the Cheras Awana entrance, you’ll find a small stall selling refreshments. Further up, at Station 3, there’s another small shelter selling drinking water. Be prepared for mosquitoes. Bring insect repellent and wear comfortable walking shoes. There are no toilets on Apek Hill. Plan accordingly. Whether you’re seeking a challenging workout, a tranquil escape, or a chance to connect with nature, Apek Hill offers a rewarding experience just a stone’s throw from the city.
