Think of Regensburg as Germany’s first parliamentary seat. We’re standing before the Königreichssaal. This hall played a vital role in the city’s history.

The Königreichssaal witnessed significant events. Regensburg got a second wind in 1663. A permanent Reichstag or Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire was established here. It became Germany’s first parliament for 150 years.

Imagine bureaucrats and emissaries filling the old merchant houses. These houses were taken over to serve the empire. The Königreichssaal echoed with debates shaping German policies. Regensburg was more than a trade center. It was a political hub.

Before this, Regensburg was a Free Imperial City for 600 years. Trade routes shifted. The city’s fortunes declined. Many patrician families left.

The Reichssaal in the Altes Rathaus served as the meeting room. This was the meeting room of the Perpetual Imperial Diet from 1663 to 1806.

Saint Boniface founded a bishopric in Regensburg in 739. Charlemagne ousted the Agilofinger dynasty in 788.

The city grew slowly. The Stone Bridge was built between 1135 and 1146. This bridge opened major trade routes. These routes connected Northern Europe and Venice. Wealthy merchant families built much of Regensburg. They flaunted their wealth. Some houses had purely decorative towers.

Today, Regensburg’s Altstadt looks much like its heyday. There are about 1400 preserved medieval buildings. They coexist with Roman-era structures.

Consider that Regensburg hosted the ecclesiastical section of Charlemagne’s General Assembly. Bishops condemned the heresy of adoptionism. This took place in 792.

Regensburg became a cultural center. It was celebrated for its gold work and fabrics. In 1245, it became a Free Imperial City.

Regensburg has always been a place for international meetings. Between 1945 and 1949, it housed Germany’s largest displaced persons camp.

In 1997, Regensburg received the Europe Prize. This was for its achievements in European integration.

The city established a World Heritage Centre in 2007. It is located in the historic Salzstadl. It provides information on Regensburg’s 2000-year history.
