Around 1880 Andrew Todd a Scotsman purchased 100 acres in what is now Kenmore Hills. He named his property Kenmore Park after his hometown. This marked the beginning of Kenmore Hills as a distinct area. Kenmore Hills wasn’t always Kenmore Hills. It was originally part of Brookfield. In 1969 the name changed reflecting its proximity to Kenmore.
Kenmore Hills’ history is interwoven with the story of St Christopher’s Lodge. In 1934 the Anglican Church opened this home for boys. It operated as a farm school until around 1959. The property later became a friary used for contemplative spirituality and community purposes. This historic site is now listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register. It’s a place of quiet reflection a reminder of the area’s diverse past.
While Kenmore Hills sits on the foothills of Mount Coot-tha its most prominent peak is Carver Hill. This hill reaches 70 meters above sea level offering stunning views. Imagine the early settlers gazing out from Carver Hill at the vast landscape. They saw rolling hills and the Brisbane River winding its way below. The area was transformed over time from farmland and timber areas to the quiet residential suburb we see today.
The population of Kenmore Hills today is quite small only 2448 people according to the 2021 census. This contrasts sharply with its larger neighbor Kenmore. The relatively small population helps maintain the peaceful atmosphere of this elevated Brisbane suburb.
Today Kenmore Hills remains a tranquil retreat offering a different perspective on Brisbane life. It’s a blend of history and modern living nestled amongst the beautiful scenery of the area. While its growth has been more modest than other suburbs its heritage and quiet charm remain its unique treasures.
