Did you ever hear of a pastor whose life verse came from Ecclesiastes? Here at Westlawn United Methodist Church, we have such a pastor. Her name is Laura Dorantes, and her motto, taken from Ecclesiastes 9:10, is “Whatever comes to your hand, do it! according to your strength.” Westlawn United Methodist Church, nestled in the heart of San Antonio’s Westside, is a bilingual congregation with a rich history and vibrant culture. It has served the community at 122 S. San Manuel for 72 years. Pastor Dorantes, originally from Mexico, leads this diverse community. Her call to ministry began at the young age of 16. Now, she brings her passion and dedication to Westlawn. Her family shares her commitment to service. Her paternal grandfather was an evangelist pastor. Both her sisters and her mother are also pastors in Mexico. Pastor Dorantes has been part of the United Methodist Church for 17 years. She has served in various roles, including women’s leader, Sunday school teacher, and director. Before arriving at Westlawn, she was the pastor of the Hispanic Ministry at Windsong Christian Center United Methodist Church and El Divino Salvador UMC. Beyond her work at Westlawn, Pastor Dorantes leads an international women’s ministry called “Mujeres Auténticas”. This ministry connects San Antonio with Piedras Negras, Mexico. It also reaches a global audience through Facebook broadcasts to countries like Spain, Chile, and Peru. In her free time, Pastor Dorantes enjoys spending time with her family, especially her seven grandchildren. She also enjoys reading, watching movies with her husband, and indulging in Chinese food. Westlawn United Methodist Church welcomes everyone. Come join us for Sunday school at 9:30 am and services at 10:30 am. Experience the warmth of this community and the inspiring leadership of Pastor Dorantes.
