Tucked away in the heart of history, stands Mount Calvary Baptist Church. It has witnessed the changing tides of New Orleans since 1876. Mount Calvary’s story, passed down through generations, is a testament to faith and resilience. The church’s journey began not within grand walls, but in the homes of believers. Led by Reverend William Willis, a small group of Christians held services house to house, nurturing the seeds of a future community. Later, a small, 15×25-foot building became their sanctuary, a humble space that served them for almost 30 years. This structure, built by the second pastor, Reverend Norman Dugger, symbolized their growing commitment. The early 20th century brought both progress and challenges for Mount Calvary Baptist Church. A new edifice was built, a symbol of their hopes for the future. Yet, this very symbol was claimed by the US government during World War I for the construction of Camp Lee, now Fort Lee. Displaced but not disheartened, the congregation continued their worship at the home of Deacon Archer Lipscomb. They later rented spaces, including a schoolhouse in Washington Heights. The church even faced internal conflict during this time. Some members left, while others remained, bound together by their shared faith. Despite these trials, Mount Calvary Baptist Church persevered. In 1920, they called Reverend Chaplin as their pastor and purchased the land where the church stands today. The price was a mere $175. Construction began on a new sanctuary, marking a new chapter in their story. Mount Calvary Baptist Church has seen a succession of pastors. Each one has left their mark, guiding the congregation through periods of growth and change. One of the most significant periods of transformation occurred under the leadership of Reverend Dr. L.W. Jacobs, who served the church for an impressive 46 years. He oversaw the construction of the current facility on Courthouse Road around 1950. Reverend Dr. Joseph Dean Morrison, the tenth pastor, led the church through extensive renovations, including the addition of a fellowship hall and upgrades to the main sanctuary. Pastor Morrison also established the first Children’s Church in 2014, further enriching the life of the congregation. The present day finds Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the guidance of Reverend Vodricka Lamont Epps, installed in 2016. He has articulated a vision focused on knowing God, growing in faith, and going in power. The church’s mission continues to evolve, embracing both local and global outreach programs. Mount Calvary Baptist Church stands not only as a place of worship but as a living testament to the enduring power of faith. It’s a story of resilience, community, and unwavering belief, woven into the very fabric of New Orleans.
