Here at ZK/U, art meets urban exploration. Since 2012, the ZK/U has hosted over 500 artists. It is a hub for creativity and research. ZK/U stands for Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik. That translates to Center for Art and Urbanistics.

KUNSTrePUBLIK is the organization behind ZK/U. This artist collective has worked in public spaces for over fifteen years. They explore how art can empower citizens. They focus on free expression and representation.

ZK/U sits in a diverse Berlin neighborhood. Conflicts can arise between different groups. Middle-class residents, migrants, and newcomers may clash. ZK/U aims to bridge these divides. They want to connect people from different backgrounds. This includes differences in education, income, gender, and culture. The goal is to unite global ideas with local actions. ZK/U explores art’s role as a catalyst. It seeks to transform urban spaces. The center demonstrates the power of participatory art.

ZK/U engages in several ongoing projects. Turn2Residencies is an intercontinental residency program. Grounded Urban Practices explores Berlin. CTB-Lab is an urban development project. It was part of the European Capital of Culture 2020 in Rijeka. ZK/U is also involved in revitalizing Haus der Statistik in Berlin.

ZK/U contributed to documenta fifteen with two projects. One was citizenship. The other was Beeholder Beecoin. The ZK/U building was extended. During this process, the main wooden roof was removed. This roof became the starting point for citizenship. It was flipped and transformed into a boat. In June 2022, the citizenship boat began its journey. It traveled from Berlin-Moabit to Kassel without fossil fuels. It relied on muscle power and renewable energy. The boat was expected to arrive on July 23, 2022. The plan was to transform the boat again. It would become a community structure. This structure would house artifacts and stories from the journey. It would also foster dialogue with Kassel residents.

The citizenship boat traveled for 44 days. It covered over 400 kilometers. It stopped at more than 30 stations. The river Weser posed challenges. The boat had limited energy resources. Strong currents and shallow waters slowed progress. An extreme drought lowered the water level. Authorities prohibited further navigation. The citizenship boat now waits in Doktorsee near Rinteln. It awaits a journey to new destinations in 2023.

Beeholder Beecoin combines art, urban activism, and beekeeping. It also uses cryptoeconomic design. This project is a blockchain-based artistic practice. As a Decentralized Autonomous Organization DAO, Beecoin improves bee living conditions. Fifteen beekeepers from Kassel participate. Visitors can also get involved. Beecoin is a common currency of lumbung currency.

ZK/U actively contributes to climate protection. It also provides solutions for climate adaptation. This ensures ZK/Us future. The expansion plans were discussed with the community. The goal was a sustainable and social ZK/U. It should be a place for encounters and neighborhood projects.
