Step into the Atelier der Schlumper. Feel the history breathe around you. This isn’t just an art studio. It’s a testament to human creativity. A vibrant community of artists. A place where dreams take shape.
The Atelier der Schlumper was founded in 1980 by Rolf Laute. He had a vision. A vision of inclusivity and artistic expression. His initial project involved a mural in the Wilfried-Borck-Haus. It was a collaboration with residents of Alsterdorf. He then established the Ateliergemeinschaft Die Schlumper. This group of artists had various disabilities. Their first studio was a temporary space. It was located in the former DRK hospital. The name itself. Die Schlumper. It reflects the location. It was near the Schlump U-Bahn station. It was in the cellars of the Stadthaus Schlump.
The Schlumper artists’ work is extraordinary. They are recognized internationally. Their art is called Outsider Art or Art Brut. Their work is collected globally in both private and public spaces.
The Ateliergemeinschaft Die Schlumper’s journey wasn’t easy. In 1993 they initiated a project called Schlumper von Beruf. This ensured that the artists received payment for their work. This wasn’t just about art. It was about providing fair employment opportunities. The Freunde der Schlumper association helped make this happen. They continue to support the atelier materially and ideally. The Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf took over in 2002. This further secured the future of this incredible group.
In 1998 a significant change occurred. The Atelier der Schlumper moved to the Alte Rinderschlachthalle. This building. The old cattle abattoir. It’s in St Pauli. The new location was more than just a studio. It also functions as an exhibition space. There’s even a café. The café sells books posters and postcards. You can even chat with the Schlumper artists.
The Atelier der Schlumper continues to thrive. They’ve collaborated widely. They’ve worked with schools and kindergartens. Their influence extends beyond the walls of their atelier. They are true pioneers of inclusive art. Their work deserves recognition. Their story inspires hope. So take a moment. Appreciate the vibrant energy of the Atelier der Schlumper. Their journey is remarkable. Their art is powerful. Their impact is lasting.
