Ever wonder what it takes to build a Mercedes-Benz van? Right here at the Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC plant in Ladson, South Carolina, you’re witnessing the heart of Sprinter and eSprinter production for North America. Mercedes chose Charleston for its only US van production facility in 2006. Since then, this location has assembled over 400,000 Metris, Sprinter, and eSprinter vans. These vans travel across the US and Canada. This makes North America the second largest market for Sprinter vans, right after Germany. The Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston plant isn’t just assembling parts. It’s building vans from the ground up. A significant investment of over $500 million in 2018 allowed for a major expansion. Mercedes added a Body Shop, a Paint Shop, and expanded the Assembly Shop. This allows for full part-by-part construction of the Sprinter and Metris vans. And in 2023, this Mercedes plant celebrated a major achievement. They produced a record-breaking 50,000 vans. The eSprinter represents another leap forward for Mercedes. Charleston was chosen as the first global production site for this all-electric van. This involved an additional investment of nearly $60 million. Production kicked off in January 2024. Just four months later, the 1,000th eSprinter rolled off the line. The Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC plant is a significant contributor to the local economy. With over 1,600 team members, it provides at least 500 additional jobs through on-site suppliers. The impact extends even further, with an estimated 15,000 jobs supported in the region. Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston is also deeply involved in the community. Since 2006, it has donated over $2.1 million to local non-profits and schools, primarily focusing on STEM programs. Team members also contribute over 1,100 volunteer hours annually. So, the next time you see a Sprinter or eSprinter van, remember the skilled hands and dedication here in Charleston that brought it to life. This Mercedes plant is a testament to advanced manufacturing, economic growth, and community partnership.
