Ever wondered what it’s like to explore the depths of the ocean in a landlocked state? Here at the Downtown Aquarium, that dream becomes a reality. This isn’t just an aquarium. It’s an underwater adventure right here in Denver.

The Downtown Aquarium, formerly known as Colorado’s Ocean Journey, sits on a 17-acre site. The main building spans 107,000 square feet. It stands proudly at the intersection of I-25 and 23rd Avenue near the South Platte River.

Originally, this facility was founded by Bill Fleming and Judy Petersen Fleming. Their vision was a nonprofit entity to highlight the connection between freshwater ecosystems and the ocean. Initially, the aquarium focused on two river systems. These were the Colorado River in North America and the Kampar River in Indonesia.

Imagine stepping inside Ocean Journey. You’d embark on two immersive experiences. The Colorado River Journey showcased species from desert pupfish to river otters. It ended with a depiction of the Sea of Cortez. Next, the Kampar River Journey featured Asian Arowanas and Sumatran tigers. That journey ended with an exhibit of the southern Pacific Ocean.

But here’s a twist in the tale. Ocean Journey faced financial struggles. In 2003, Landry’s Restaurants, Inc. purchased the facility for $13.6 million. It was renamed Downtown Aquarium after renovations in 2005.

These renovations included adding a full-service restaurant. Imagine dining next to a 150,000-gallon marine aquarium. Today, while the original river journeys remain, the exhibits are more diverse. You’ll now find species from African and South American freshwater ecosystems. Mixed community tanks offer even more variety.

The Downtown Aquarium is not only about observing. It’s about interacting too. The horseshoe crab touch tank offers a hands-on experience. You can also feed and touch stingrays in the stingray touch-and-feed tank.

Conservation remains a key focus at the Downtown Aquarium. It houses numerous endangered and threatened species. These include twelve species of fish, six of reptiles, two of mammals, and two of birds. It even participates in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan for Sumatran tigers.

The Downtown Aquarium’s commitment extends to education. The Deep Blue Sea Foundation ensures the educational goals of the original founders are met. The aquarium periodically hosts educational seminars too.

So, the Downtown Aquarium is more than just a place to see fish. It’s a journey through diverse aquatic ecosystems. It’s a blend of entertainment and education. It’s a commitment to conservation all under one roof.

As you leave the Downtown Aquarium, remember the journey from Colorado’s rivers to the Pacific Ocean. Think about the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems. Hopefully, you leave with a newfound appreciation for the underwater world.
