Before us lies Parc des Dondaines a green haven in Lille’s urban landscape.

Did you know this peaceful park was once a bustling shantytown? The Dondaines a name derived from “dos d’ânes” meaning “donkey backs” refers to the hilly banks of the Chaude Rivière. This now-covered river once flowed through the area. Its waters famously never froze a fact that supposedly cured many ailments.

The Parc des Dondaines’ history is intertwined with Lille’s evolution. Before its transformation into a park this area housed a significant shantytown. Home to rag-pickers nomads and factory workers it was the largest of its kind in Lille. Demolished in 1971-1972 its inhabitants were relocated. This land was then developed into the green space we see today.

The park’s creation spanned from 1973 to the early 1980s. It was built on land between the old city walls and the Fives district near Fort Sainte-Agnès. This small fort a part of Lille’s fortifications stood near the site of the present-day Lille-Europe train station. The fort itself was destroyed around 1990 during the construction of the high-speed rail line serving the station. A climbing wall designed by Jean Pattou in 1976 is a unique element of the park.

The Parc des Dondaines is bisected by a ring road. A tree-lined walkway connects the two sections of the park. It’s a testament to urban planning that successfully integrates green spaces into a busy city. The park’s ecological management promotes biodiversity. Delayed mowing techniques help preserve wildflowers and small animals ensuring their food and habitat.

One of the park’s most notable features is its ancient Indian chestnut tree. Since 2002 it has been classified as a remarkable tree. Its age unique characteristics and historical significance earned it this prestigious recognition. The tree stands as a silent witness to the park’s transformation. It’s a living symbol of the area’s enduring spirit. This tree survived the demolition of the shantytown and is a symbol of perseverance.

Today Parc des Dondaines offers a playground and a dog park a welcome respite from the bustling city. It’s a reminder that even in the heart of urban development nature can thrive. Remember the story of the Dondaines as you explore this unique park a blend of history nature and resilience. It perfectly reflects Lille’s dynamic past and its vibrant present.
