In 1875, a modest schoolhouse opened its doors in the heart of Osaka. This was the ancestor of what we now know as the Osaka City Shirokitashiro Elementary School. It began as the Fifth Ward, Third Subdivision, Fifth Town, Nakayama Village Elementary School. Imagine children, with their wooden clogs clicking on the dusty paths, attending classes in a simple building, amidst the growing city. The Osaka City Shirokitashiro Elementary School, a name that rolls off the tongue with a sense of history, has seen numerous transformations over the decades. In 1887, its name changed to Higashi-Naka Simple Elementary School under jurisdiction of East Nara Prefecture. In 1889, after merging with the Arawashi Simple Elementary School, it became the East Nara Prefecture Shirokitajima Regular Elementary School. The school relocated to its current site in Akagawa in 1902. This move and new building marked its official establishment date, May 10th, a date still celebrated annually. Over the years, the school expanded, adding a higher department in 1918, which later closed in 1934. The school also played a role in the establishment of other schools, separating to form the present-day Osaka City Tsurumigawa Elementary School in 1921 and Osaka City Takatsuki Elementary School in 1936. During World War II, with the escalating war effort, children from Osaka City Shirokitashiro Elementary School participated in evacuation programs. They were primarily sent to rural areas in the northern regions of Osaka prefecture and nearby Hokuriku region for safety. The school itself suffered damage during the Third Osaka Air Raid on June 7, 1945. With the post-war educational reforms, the school was renamed Osaka City Shirokitashiro Elementary School in 1947. The school continued to evolve, expanding its grounds in 1949, adopting a school song in 1964, and introducing 30-student classrooms in 1970. Today, Osaka City Shirokitashiro Elementary School stands as a testament to its rich history. It continues to serve the community, educating the next generation in the same location it has occupied for over a century.
