In the heart of Mumbai, stands the Holy Cross Church. It’s a testament to a rich history, stretching back to the Portuguese era. The Holy Cross Church wasn’t always known by this name. Initially, it was christened “Iglesia de San Salvador”, meaning the Church of Our Holy Saviour. Later, it became known as “Invencao de Santa Cruz”, meaning Church of the finding of the Holy Cross. Eventually, it was simplified to the Holy Cross Church, perhaps highlighting the importance of the Cross in Christian faith. The church you see today was rebuilt in 1848. But its story began much earlier, in 1588, when Jesuit priests first constructed a church on this very spot. Imagine the scene back then: a small, devout community gathering for prayer in a time when Mumbai was a collection of islands. The Holy Cross Church has witnessed Mumbai’s dramatic transformation. It has stood firm amidst wars and political upheavals. The church’s location, close to the Mahim creek, once made it vulnerable to attacks from the Sion Hillock Fort. The Holy Cross Church remains a vibrant center of faith in bustling Mumbai. Its weathered walls whisper tales of resilience, faith and the enduring power of community.
