Did you know that the imposing Église Saint-Christophe boasts a carillon with 62 bells? This isn’t just any church. Standing before you is a breathtaking example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Its history stretches back centuries. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Tourcoing.

The Église Saint-Christophe wasn’t always this magnificent. Its story begins much earlier. Archaeological digs reveal a stone sanctuary existing before the year 1000. Possibly built between the 7th and 9th centuries. The first documented building dates back to the 11th century. Since 1491 the church has been under the protection of Saint Christopher. He’s the patron saint of travelers. A fitting patron for a place that has seen so much travel and transformation.

Over the centuries the church grew. In the 12th century a main nave was added. It featured four bays and pillars supporting round arches. A porch opened onto this grand space. Two side aisles flanked the nave. A transept was added in the 13th century. This was later enlarged as the naves expanded. This expansion reflects Tourcoing’s prosperity. The town’s success in producing and distributing woolen cloths is reflected in the church’s growth.

From the 16th century to the French Revolution the church underwent a complete transformation. Each period of embellishment marked a period of prosperity for the town. The western part was rebuilt. Doubling its initial size. Then the choir was expanded creating a vast hall church. All sections are the same height. They communicate with each other. This highlights the building’s verticality. The interior is open and bright thanks to large stained-glass windows. Around 1723 some features were redesigned in the classical style. The Lillois architect Thomas-Joseph Gombert oversaw these changes. He installed a new main altar.

The Église Saint-Christophe’s current neo-Gothic appearance is a product of the 19th century. It was entirely rebuilt starting in 1852. The Lillois architect Charles Leroy led this ambitious project. His design was unusual. It’s neither a Greek cross nor a Latin cross plan. After Leroy left in 1866 Charles Maillard took over. He completed the sculpture pavement and furnishings. His colleague Louis Croïn finished the reconstruction. He raised the tower and completed the new sacristy. By 1900 the Église Saint-Christophe was vastly different from what it was in the 1840s. Enlarged and heightened with abundant sculpted decoration the small village church had become an imposing monument. It now resembles a cathedral. This unique monument is a blend of creation and pastiche. It has been listed as a historical monument since 1981.
