Tucked away in the San Gabriel foothills lies Altacanyada. It’s more than just a name on a map. Altacanyada whispers tales of resilience, dreams, and the changing tides of Southern California history. Altacanyada began as part of Rancho San Rafael, a vast expanse granted to Jose Verdugo, a retired Spanish soldier. In the 1870s, visionaries and health-seekers arrived, drawn by the promise of a new life. Colonel Thomas Hall, one of these pioneers, acquired land north of Rancho La Cañada. He named his slice of paradise “Alta Canyada”. His son Tom, struggling with a lung ailment, found healing in the area’s fresh air. Altacanyada wasn’t immune to the challenges faced by early settlers. Water scarcity was a constant concern. Disputes over precious water resources from Pickens Canyon sometimes escalated, with ranchers guarding their water rights with rifles. The arrival of electricity in 1910 finally brought some relief, enabling deep well pumping and providing water for the growing community. As Los Angeles expanded, Altacanyada transformed from a remote outpost to a desirable suburb. The automobile and paved roads ended its isolation. Senator Frank Flint developed a portion of the area, christening it “Flintridge”. Edwin T. Earl bought the Hall ranch, retaining the name “Alta Canyada”. This marked a shift from agriculture to residential living. Altacanyada, along with the rest of La Cañada Flintridge, eventually incorporated in 1976 after several attempts. This move solidified its identity and ensured local control over its future. Altacanyada stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who sought a better life in the California foothills.
