Built in the 1890s-1900s South Lodge stands proudly. It’s part of Pollok House’s grand estate. South Lodge is more than just a gatehouse. It’s a historical landmark. This single-story almost square building guards the southern approach to Pollok House.

Look closely at its symmetrical facade. Note the central door. Three bays grace its elegant elevation. The driveway leads right to it. The pitched slate roof is topped with paired chimneys. These are actually centrally positioned on the building’s plan. Rusticated quoins frame the rubble-built walls. Ashlar dressings add a touch of refinement. Window margins boast intricate inoe moulding. This detail echoes 17th-century features found in the nearby stables. Twelve-paned sash and case windows complete the refined appearance.

The South Lodge’s south elevation faces the main road. It’s fully windowed. A modern porch stands unobtrusively on the east wall. In contrast the north elevation facing Pollok House and its grounds is plain. It’s almost blank. This design choice likely prioritized privacy for the main house.

South Lodge isn’t alone. It’s part of a larger gateway. Tall square gatepiers flank the entrance. They are heavily rusticated. They may date back to the mid-18th century when Pollok House itself was constructed. Sculpted vase finials top the gatepiers. However they may not be original.

The gateway also includes quadrants. Their exact age is uncertain. They might also be 18th-century. They’re built of rubble with ashlar dressings. Each features a single bipartite opening one blocked suggesting possible earlier structures. The terminal piers are unusually designed. They share the rusticated stonework of the gatepiers. The decorative timber and ironwork gate completes this impressive entrance.

South Lodge’s history is interwoven with that of Pollok House and Pollok Park. It whispers tales of grand estates elegant designs and enduring history. It stands as a silent guardian a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. This unassuming building quietly tells its story to those who take the time to look. South Lodge a gateway to a richer past.
